I Can and I Will...
Have you ever really thought about what this statement means?
Let’s break it down and see what we can get from this simple statement.
What do those two words really mean?
“I” - means “You”.
“Can” - means you’ve thought about the ideas (the thoughts, the possibilities, the desire, the need, the wants) and it appears to be possible to you.
So when we put the two together for the first part of the statement it means “You” have thought about the ideas and your thoughts appear to be possible to you.
“I” - means “You”.
“Will” - means you’ve now committed to your ideas and now you’re going to “Take Action” to achieve them. Also I think some people forget that there is also another meaning to the word “Will” it also means a driving force within you that refuses to quit.
That’s why when we see the word “Will” often put together with other words such as “Willpower” those words all of sudden become “Action” words. “Will” is an action word.
So when we put the two together for this second part of the statement it means “You” are committed to your ideas and you are also committed to “Taking Action” to achieve those ideas.
Now let’s look at what we have learned so far about this very simple but very powerful statement.
“I CAN” = “You” have thought about the ideas.
“I WILL” = “You” are committed to your ideas and you are committed to “Taking Action” on those ideas.
So how do we get from the thought of ideas to the actual action of our ideas? (I think this is a question a lot of people have.)
What are we missing from the statement above that would help us bridge that gap?
“AND” is a continuation word. When we see the word “And” we pause for a brief moment then we automatically move forward. We know once we see the word “And” that we aren’t done yet, that we still need to push forward till we get to the end.
Now that we’ve answered the gap question let’s put it all together.
(Here is a small cheat sheet just in case you are skimming to the end of this post.)
“I CAN” = “You have thought about the ideas.
“AND” = is an automatic continuation word, so don’t stop keep pushing forward.
“I WILL” = “You” are committed to your ideas and you are committed to “Taking Action” on your ideas.
So the next time you say this statement “I can and I will” to yourself or someone else, I hope you will realize what you are saying and the commitment you are making not only to the other person, but also of yourself.
